MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS PODCAST EPISODE #16

April 6th, 2019

Special Guests: Kate Bethel

Owner, Maven Bath & Candle Co.

Summary:

A year and a half after her son was born, Kate Bethel sensed that something was off. She chalked it up to the stress of being a new mom and the pressures common with owning her business, Maven Bath & Candle Co. But her symptoms were only getting worse as time passed. That’s when she decided to be evaluated.

At first, she was relieved to learn that she had borderline personality disorder, major depressive disorder and ADHD. At least there was an explanation for the ways she had been feeling and acting. But she soon started feeling angry after noticing a shift in people’s reactions when she told them about her mental-health conditions. Kate then decided to come clean and share her diagnoses on social media to help people better understand. Executive Director Tom Duff, MSW, LCSW talks with Kate in this week’s podcast about her struggles with mental illness, as well as the challenges of being a business owner. Her suggestion for staying afloat: At the end of the day, it all comes down to one thing – taking care of yourself.
