How our Counselors Tailor Therapy for Children
The need for mental health care can affect people of all ages. At Saint Louis Counseling, a ministry of Catholic Charities, we serve clients as young as preschool age. In each case, our skilled, compassionate therapists tailor their approach to suit a client’s developmental stage.
For our youngest clients (generally up to age 11), play therapy can be a big part of their experience. Because younger children often struggle to express themselves verbally, they may better reveal their emotions and experiences through interacting with toys, creating art, or playing games. Similarly, stories and metaphors can help children understand and relate to complex concepts and emotions.
Structure is also an important element for successful therapy sessions with children. Having a predictable routine when they come to therapy helps young clients feel safe and secure in the counseling environment (just as routines help in the other parts of their lives, too).
Saint Louis Counseling therapists also collaborate closely with parents and guardians when serving young clients. With strong communication, counselors have a more informed approach to services by hearing caregivers’ perspectives. Providers can also prepare parents or guardians to work toward therapeutic goals between sessions, as well.
We know that an individualized approach to counseling, based on clients’ specific needs, can lead to more effective, meaningful outcomes for the people we serve. Just as we tailor therapy based on cultural, social, and other personal considerations, recognizing and supporting a client’s developmental stage is crucial to a successful course of treatment.
