How We Adapt Therapy for Preteens and Young Teens

Saint Louis Counseling therapists provide individualized mental health care for our clients. Along with cultural, social, and other personal considerations, developmental stage is an important factor in the approach to therapy. For preteen and young teen clients (generally ages 12-14), treatment plans that are tailored to their developmental needs can lead to more effective and meaningful outcomes.

The middle school years are often a time of self-discovery. Our counselors know that for clients in this age group, it’s especially important for therapy to feel like a safe space to explore their identity, values, and beliefs.

This is also a crucial stage for learning how to manage emotions and stress. Therapists can introduce early adolescents to age-appropriate coping skills that promote a healthy response to life’s challenges.

Preteen and young teen clients may benefit from group therapy, as well. After all, peer interaction is important for adolescents. Group therapy can provide support and a sense of belonging.

Family therapy may also be valuable for clients in this age group. This setting offers an opportunity to work through conflicts or communication issues within the family unit.

At Saint Louis Counseling, a ministry of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, we offer mental health care for clients as young as preschool age. For each person we’re privileged to serve, we offer a personalized approach based on their individual needs.
