July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month

At Saint Louis Counseling, we are committed to an inclusive approach to mental health care – an approach which respects and appreciates the rich cultural tapestry of our region.

In July, we observe National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. Established in 2008, this designation aims to increase public awareness of mental illness among underserved communities and improve access to mental health treatment and services.

Consider this data from the American Psychiatric Association:

  • Data show that people from racial or ethnic minority groups are less likely to receive mental health care. Among whites experiencing mental illness, 48% receive mental health services, but that percentage drops to 31% for Black and Hispanic individuals experiencing mental illness, and 22% for Asian individuals experiencing mental illness.
  • Rates of depression are lower among Black and Hispanic populations compared to whites, but depression is likely to be more persistent when experienced by Black or Hispanic individuals.

Saint Louis Counseling therapists work to understand clients’ culture and background in order to provide excellent care. Additionally, to serve clients who use a variety of languages, we work with confidential interpreters from LAMP, the language services arm of Catholic Charities.
