What to Expect in Your First Counseling Session
Setting up your first therapy session can bring about a range of feelings. You might be excited for the possibility of growth. Or maybe you’re nervous about discussing something painful. Either way, knowing what to expect can help you make the most of your first counseling session.
When you meet with one of the skilled, compassionate therapists from Saint Louis Counseling, you’ll be in good hands. Our professional counselors are committed to supporting healing and improved mental health for people of all backgrounds.
Your therapist will want to learn about your reasons for pursuing counseling. They’ll ask how you’re feeling and how you’ve been feeling in recent days. They’ll want to hear about anything that has happened which contributes to how you’ve been feeling. They’ll also want to hear any questions you may have about their skillset, methods, and the process.
As you share, your therapist will offer a caring listening ear. You may see your therapist taking notes to keep track. Everything you share will be kept confidential.
Then, your therapist will suggest some next steps depending on your situation. These may include scheduling future sessions. On average, our clients who receive office-based counseling have eight to 10 sessions during their course of therapy.
Sometimes, additional support may be needed, such as psychiatry or perhaps various social services. Many of these resources are available through Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, a family of ministries that includes Saint Louis Counseling. Because of this relationship, these additional resources can be part of an integrated plan tailored for your needs.
When your first session is done, you might feel optimistic about your treatment plan. Or, you might feel tired out by the work you’ve put in. Or perhaps you’ll feel neutral while you process the session. These are all natural. Just keep in mind that, for most people, the first session is simply the start of a courageous journey toward improved wellbeing. We’re honored to journey with you.
