MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS PODCAST EPISODE #8

January 4, 2019

Tom Duff, MSW, LCSW

Executive Director, Saint Louis Counseling

Summary:

How do emotional and mental health differ – or do they? We all have our own baseline of mental health, but how can we tell the difference between our feelings (emotional health), such as grief, jealousy, low self-esteem, power, to name a few, and a diagnosable mental-health condition, like depression, anxiety, ADHD or OCD?

“Know thyself.” That’s the mantra that Executive Director Tom Duff, MSW, LCSW promotes among therapists to help clients better understand themselves. Emotions drive behavior. And, as Tom explains, it’s difficult to move forward in life, if you don’t know who you are at the core or if you don’t know what you are feeling. In this week’s Mental Health Matters episode, Tom talks about how mental and emotional health both play roles in every aspect of life. It’s how we’re wired. But the more we know ourselves and the more we take the opportunity to check ourselves, the more open we are to growth. And isn’t that what so much of life is all about?
